Obama is proposing we build a high-speed rail system. I'm supposing that a high-speed train would need a large terminal, parking, and rental cars to be viable. Here in Denver, a high-speed train station would probably be built at Denver International Airport, since they have all that stuff already and land to build on. If you wanted to go to Chicago and were already at the airport, would you ride the 250 MPH train, or would you just take a 450 MPH airplane like always? What if the train stopped in Kansas City, and St. Louis, would that be a deal killer? We may need short train systems from Boston to D.C., or Dallas to Houston, or L.A to Vegas. But would want to pay for these systems that only benefitted local areas? Why haven't they been built already?

High speed rail is probably not going to work in places like Denver to Chicago. It is best for short-haul distances that are too long to drive but too short to fly. For example, LA to San Francisco, and New York to Boston are two that have been proposed. I don't think Denver to Chicago is feasible. Would we want to pay for these systems that only benefitted local areas? Well, would you want to pay for freeways for those areas instead?

What is the most cost efficient method of travel?

My family and I will be going from Chicago to Texas, during the holidays of course. I have looked into airfare and it looks like it's going to be expensive. We have considered driving, but with gas prices being what they are.....plus, we have a full-size Tundra, not the most gas efficient vehicle. My Camry would be great, but too old to be reliable enough for a trip that long. Trains are just as expensive as flying. So now we're back to flying v. driving. I wouldn't mind either one, it's just that we don't know what the gas prices will be like. Any ideas as to how we could minimize the cost of this trip? We're staying with family so we don't have to pay for hotel/rental car. The other option I have is to drive from Texas to Vegas with my brother and then fly back to Chicago from Vegas. I would love to do that as well, but it seems that the one way tickets (Chicago to Dallas, then Vegas to Chicago) would be more expensive then roundtrip Chicago/Dallas. We plan on leaving Dec. 26, 2008 and returning on the following weekend (Jan. 4 or 5). Any tips? Oh, it's just my husband and my son and myself. My ex has to pay for my son's ticket though if we fly because he lives in Texas and it is his visitation time, so really I only have to pay for two of us. And I can bet my ex won't pitch in for gas money if we drive.

Sit down with everyone that is going on the trip and find out if they really want to go. If they do, ask them if they would be willing to chip in for the cost of the gas. If you have a big family, see if they would be willing to draw one name out of a hat and that is the only person they have to get present for and that way you can use the rest of the money for the trip. I have several friends that did this and they had a great time. They did it a little different though. One friend had the big truck and everyone decides that they would use her truck and the rest would pay for the gas, since she was paying to have the vehicle serviced before the trip. Good Luck.

As a former airline employee, the above answer is the best. Go to the local police department and file a police report. That is the only way to get home. Since this is your return, most airlines won't prevent you from flying per say, just make you sweat. You will be a full search though, so be prepared for that. Normally if you lost your ID you would have to have two forms of non photo ID such as a Social Security Card, Birth Certificate, Expired drivers liscense, Expired Passport, Voters registration card, Vehicle Registration, Hunting or Fishing liscense, something government issued. Of course if your wallet was lost, you will not hve any of these. Regarless of who you are, you have to have something to show your identity. The people in the call center do not work at the airport and usually do not know the procedures nor have they ever had ticket counter experience and dont know what we can let slide. Most times they are in a call center over in India and only follow the information on the screen in front of them. Like I said, if this is your return, normally they will not prevent you from going home. You apparently made it to DFW. So, to be on the safe side, go ahead and stop by a police department and file a report and keep that with you. That will be your only saving grace. But again, allow ample time at the airport because you will now become a selectee, or a full search passenger. No need to worry, you will be alright and be allowed to fly home.
